The guide — edited, not hyped
Is Mykonos gay friendly?
Yes, genuinely — and it's worth saying why that's different from a badge. Mykonos has been a gay destination for decades, long before it was a marketing decision, and the result is an island where being a couple is unremarkable. Nobody is performing tolerance at you.
But "welcoming" describes the island, not your holiday. Mykonos has two reputations — the party island and the quiet one — and they're the same island in different months and different postcodes. If the version you want is the second, the trick is where you base yourselves. The island's fame can otherwise drown out the trip you were actually after.
Is Mykonos quiet in October?
Considerably quieter than most people expect, and quieter than anywhere else in Greece at that time of year.
The crowds leave after the first week. Prices come down. The sea is still warm enough to swim, and the light turns soft and amber in a way photographs flatten out. Most restaurants and bars stay open through early October, and Chora becomes somewhere you can wander rather than navigate.
The honest caveat: by late October some places begin closing for the winter. If you want a bit of life around you, aim for the first half of the month. If you'd rather have the island almost to yourselves, go later and accept that a few doors will be shut.
Where to base yourselves
The north shore, usually. The south has the beach clubs and the crowds; the north has the houses, the wind, and a more local pace. A private villa with a pool gives you the thing that's hardest to buy on Mykonos in high season — privacy, and the freedom to be affectionate without a second look.
Town works beautifully out of season if you'd rather walk to dinner every night. It's just worth weighing that against how much you value your own outdoor space.
Getting around
You don't need a car. If you're staying outside Chora, I'd arrange transfers and a driver for the evenings — I'd rather you spent your evening on a terrace than circling a car park in Mykonos Town in August.
FAQ — Mykonos beyond the scene
Is Mykonos good for honeymoons?
Yes — especially October, when the scene has quietened and the light is at its best. A private villa gives you complete privacy.
When should we go?
June, or late September into October. July and August are the busiest and the most expensive; September keeps the weather and loses most of the crowd.
Do we need a car?
Not if you're staying outside town — I'd arrange transfers instead, and a driver for evenings. Parking in Mykonos Town in high season is a holiday of its own.
